The ELIXIR-PT/BioData.pt infrastructure and the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) are proud to announce that a Data Carpentry Workshop, with a special focus on Genomics data, will be held at the IGC on October 15th and 16th 2018. For those unfamiliar with the concept, Data Carpentry aims at systematically delivering workshops on the fundamental data skills needed to conduct research. What you will learn will largely influence the way in which you handle data in a fully independent way, free from proprietary software and storage platforms.
Reference genomes have become central to bioinformatics approaches, and form the core of standard analyses using contemporary sequencing data. However, the use of linear reference genomes, which provide the sequence of one representative genome for a species, is increasingly becoming a limitation as the number of sequenced genomes grows. In particular, they tend to bias us away from the observation of variation in the genomes we study.
A 2-day course in functional annotation of genomic/transcriptomic data and other topics will be given by Dr. Amy Tang as part of an EMBL-EBI Bioinformatics Workshop to be held at CCMAR on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd October 2017.
