Twenty-four participants from several European Projects (PhenoHarmonis, BrAPI, EMPHASIS, RDA, DivSeek, etc) discussed the future of MIAPPE1 at the IPK, Gatersleben, Germany, 22-23 May 2017. Inês Chaves represented iBET (http://www.ibet.pt/research/forest-biotech) and the Portuguese node of ELIXIR at this meeting.

MIAPPE (www.miappe.org) is a Minimum Information (MI) standard for plant phenotyping developed in the framework of transPLANT project, and the first release happened in March 2013. Within the ELIXIR-Excelerate workpackage 7, a set of guidelines with agreed vocabularies for plant phenotype annotation was achieved based on the extension and revision of the MIAPPE standard for specification of required information about plant phenotyping experiments.

In this meeting it was agreed that MIAPPE should not be owned by any single project, but should have multiple, equal stakeholders. Thus, a governance body responsible for approving MIAPPE data standards, was formalized by the election of a Steering Committee. This Committee should look forward to promote information exchange between interested projects, identify future priority areas and establish working groups to address these, identify future opportunities for outreach and funding.
