Ready For BioData Management? – Introduction to Data Management Plans (Online) is an introductory one-day course aiming at disseminating Data Management best practices and teaching the basics of making and using Data Management Plans (DMPs) in the context of research activities. It is organized by BioData.pt and sponsored by the Portuguese node of the Research Data Alliance.

Feel free to register for RDA and also join RDA in Portugal.

The course features two introductory lectures on Research Data Management and DMPs, followed by a hands-on DMP exercise where participants will form groups to fill in a DMP for a mock research project. The produced DMPs will then be reviewed and discussed.

The course will be delivered online, in real time, via Zoom, using Google Spreadsheets for the hands-on group exercise.

Registration is free but exclusive for members or collaborators of the Universidade da Beira Interior.

Target Audience: Researchers, Lab Managers, PhD and Master Students, other science professionals.
No previous experience with DMPs required.

Debriefing

The first online edition of the course took place on July 8th for the Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI), to a turnout of 16 participants, which were mostly post-doctoral researchers and PhD students.

From a technical standpoint, the course was very successful, as the use of Zoom breakout rooms and Google Spreadsheets proved very suitable for the group exercise. The feedback from the participants was very positive, as most participants rated the quality of the course and materials, as well as the organization and online logistic aspects, as either very good or excellent (the top 2 classes in a 5 class scale). Of highlight were the interesting discussions on crucial data management topics such as data privacy or usage licenses.

Elsa Cardoso, Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences of UBI, gave her testimony about the course:

“I´ve got to know a new and recent way of preparing a research plan at the management level, and the course had an excellent balance between theoretical lectures, practical exercises, and discussions"

We would like to thank the participants for their interest, and above all, Dr. Adriana Santos, who served as the contact point from the UBI, advertising the event.
